マルチユニット

Derail Valley には2種類のマルチユニット(略してMU)があります。「固定編成」のMUは、蒸気機関車と炭水車、または長い編成の旅客車両など、複数の鉄道車両を恒久的に接続するように設計されています。「非固定編成」のMUは、運転士によってMUケーブルを使用して手動で接続されるMUです。

一部の動力車には、両端に青色のケーブルが付いており、「非固定編成」のMU構成に利用できます。このケーブルは、エアホースの接続方法と同様に、ハンドシェイク方式で別の車両の MUケーブルに接続できます。車両が MU接続されている場合、これらの車両は1台の車両であるかのように、1つの運転台から 1人の運転士が制御でき、協調動作します。この機能は、一部の電気機関車、電気式ディーゼル機関車、液体式ディーゼル機関車やレールカーで利用できます。MU接続が適切に機能するには、車両のエンジンとブレーカーを個別に ON にする必要があります。

Such vehicles can also be equipped with wireless MU controller gadgets , which let them sync at distance, without the use of cables.

When multiple-units are connected, whether by cable or wirelessly, they operate in unison, all controlled by a single driver, as if they were a single vehicle. This feature is available on some electric , diesel-electric and diesel-hydraulic motorized vehicles. The vehicles need to have their engines and breakers turned on individually for the MU connection to function properly.

It is allowed to have some vehicles in MU configuration oriented differently from others. In such a case their reverser automatically adapts to the desired direction of travel. Headlights and taillights automatically adapt in MU configurations, too.

注意すべきこととして、MUを利用して異なる種類の車両を組み合わせると、非同期の動作が発生する可能性があります。この際、1台のユニットが過熱したり、トラクションを失ったり、より多くの燃料を消費したり、別のユニットとは異なった動作をします。この補助として、問題が起きたユニットからの警報はすべての MU接続されたユニットに伝播され、計器に表示されます。
