Suunnanvaihdin

Suunnanvaihdin on ohjauslaite, tyypillisesti vipu, jota käytetään moottoriajoneuvon kulkusuunnan asettamiseen – eteen, taakse tai vapaalle. Jälkimmäinen erottaa tyypillisesti pyörät voimansiirrosta kokonaan. Suunnanvaihdinta ei saa koskaan käyttää ajoneuvon ollessa liikkeessä, jotta vältytään voimansiirron katastrofaalisilta vaurioilta. Samasta syystä kaasu ja dynaamiset jarrut on tyypillisesti kytkettävä irti, jotta suunnanvaihdin toimii.

Vehicles equipped with a reverser can run both forward and backward with equal capacity, and are even equipped with lights on both ends for this purpose. Depending on the vehicle design, the only difference when changing orientation can be in driving visibility, and cooling behavior .
