在 Derail Valley 中有兩種類型的多單元車輛編組。一種是設計為永久連結的「固定編成」，如部分蒸汽機車必須搭配煤水車使用。另一種是「非固定編成」，即車輛連結時，有著可選用的聯控跳線或無線聯控控制器。要進行聯控，您需要「多單元車組」執照。

僅有部分車輛配有聯控跳線，此資訊載於車輛目錄。聯控跳線位於車輛兩端，類似氣軔軟管，能與另一車輛的同類纜線連接。

此類車輛也能安裝無線聯控控制器裝置，讓他們不需使用聯控跳線，而以無線方式進行同步。

當車輛透過電纜或無線方式連接時，各單元會由單一車輛操作，與其同步運行。此功能在部分電力、柴油電力和柴油液力機車上可見。車輛必須啟動引擎和斷路器使聯控功能正常運作。

車輛以聯控方式連接時，方向不必一致。它們的逆轉機將自動切換至對應行駛方向。車輛的頭等和尾燈也將如此。

不同類型車輛之間進行聯控，或車輛於列車所處位置不同，可能會導致出力不一，使單元過熱、喪失牽引力、消耗更多燃料等不同步狀態。因此，來自任何單位的車輛警報將傳播至所有與其聯控車輛的儀表上。

機車遙控器也可用於操作多單元編組。
