Bremszylinder sind konstruktiv bedingt nicht ganz druckdicht und verlieren mit der Zeit Luft. Deshalb kann man sich nicht darauf verlassen, dass die Bremsen über lange Zeit angelegt bleiben. Wird in einem Zug mit selbstregelndem Bremsventil gebremst, werden die Bremszylinder so lange nachgespeist, wie die Lokomotive läuft und der Luftpresser funktionsfähig ist. Ein Entlaufen des Zuges ist somit nicht möglich. Sollte sich jedoch im Zug nur ein nicht selbstregelndes Führerbremsventil befinden, werden die Bremszylinder nicht nachgespeist, wenn sich das Ventil in Stellung „Abschluss“ befindet.
