貫通ブレーキは、列車編成を減速および停止するための主要な手段として設計されたブレーキシステムです。

列車を停止させるには大きなブレーキ力が必要なので、列車の各車両には空気ブレーキが装備されており、これにより列車全体を、あたかも 1両の車両であるかのようにブレーキを掛けることが可能になります。

貫通ブレーキを掛ける時は、動力車に搭載されているブレーキ弁から操作します。
貫通ブレーキは、ブレーキ管から大気中に空気を放出することでブレーキを掛けます。
これにより、補助空気タンクが蓄えた圧力をブレーキシリンダーに送り込み、ブレーキシューを車輪に押し当てて、列車にブレーキを掛けます。

貫通ブレーキを緩める時も、同じくブレーキ弁から操作します。
元空気タンクからの空気がブレーキ管を加圧することで緩みます。
その後、補助空気タンクは、ブレーキ管から空気を補充し、一方でブレーキシリンダーへの空気供給は行いません。
これにより、ブレーキシューが車輪から離れ、列車のブレーキは解除されます。

列車に複数の動力車がある場合は、必ず 1 つのブレーキ弁のみ、重連コックを開いてください。

貫通ブレーキは、列車に貨車・客車が連結されている場合に使用します。
列車が動力車のみで編成されている場合、それが 1両であっても、マルチユニット構成であっても、単独ブレーキを使用する方が応答性は良好です。

ブレーキシューの過熱を防ぐために貫通ブレーキを補助として、一部の動力車にはダイナミックブレーキが装備されています。
