調車工作是在貨運訂單成立前、貨運列車抵達後對列車車輛進行編組、分配的工作。

在為貨運訂單進行列車編組時,首先得從可能被有多組列車佔用的儲車軌道上取得空車輛,之後將它們集中至「貨運裝卸線」軌道進行裝載,最後將它們移動至「出發線」軌道,為貨運工作完成準備。

在為已抵達的貨運列車進行分 配時,首先要將裝有貨物的列車移動至「貨運裝卸線」軌道進行卸載,接著將個別車輛分別移動至可能被其他車輛佔用的儲車軌道停放。

調車工作可能需要自放有其他列車的儲車軌道將特定車輛移出,或許有必要挪動軌道上的其他車輛。目的地軌道則一定會預留足夠空間。

如訂單概覽所示,調車工作需要進行一到三次空車連結或解連。這將影響工作的複雜程度和酬勞金額。

當列車抵達貨運裝卸線軌道時,司機員需要使用貨物轉裝機為列車進行裝卸。

調車是危險性最高的工作類型,尤其是在處理危險貨物時。這是因為它們涉及車輛之間的大量接觸,而在產業和城鎮範圍內移動車輛時建築物可能會阻擋視線,使人為錯誤特別容易發生。

根據調車工作的類型,完成後將建立新的貨運或空車輛回送訂單。
