Los frenos son dispositivos que se encuentran a bordo de los vehículos ferroviarios, que se utilizan para reducir la velocidad de éstos, detenerlos, o mantenerlos quietos. Hay varios tipos diferentes de frenos que normalmente están presentes en el material rodante motorizado y otros, y cada uno es más apropiado para un diferente propósito particular. Cada uno de ellos es operado por un dispositivo de control individual, generalmente una palanca o una manivela que puede estar ubicada dentro de la cabina o en el exterior del vehículo.

La aplicación de los frenos casi siempre está orientada hacia adelante. Esto es para que, en caso de emergencia, el maquinista pueda empujar todas las palancas hacia adelante como medida de seguridad, sin necesidad de pensar en la regla individual para cada control.
