Vehiculele feroviare electrice pot primi energie din diferite tipuri de surse. Un exemplu sunt vehiculele electrice care trag curent dintr-un fir aerian, printr-o conexiune cunoscută sub numele de pantograf. Celălalt exemplu ar fi cele alimentate de o baterie de bord. În cele din urmă, există și vehicule diesel-electrice, dotate cu un motor cu ardere internă (așa-numitul „primer motor”), care generează curent electric la bordul locomotivei. În timp ce prezența lor vizuală și auditivă poate fi foarte diferită una de cealaltă, vehiculele electrice și diesel-electrice folosesc ambele motoare de tracțiune pentru propulsie, alimentate de electricitate.
