Brzdy jsou zařízení, která se nacházejí na palubě kolejových vozidel a slouží k jejich zpomalení, zastavení nebo udržení v klidu. Existuje několik různých typů brzd, které lze obvykle najít na hnacích a jiných kolejových vozidlech, přičemž každá je vhodná pro určitý účel. Každá z nich je ovládána samostatným ovládacím zařízením, obvykle pákou nebo klikou, které lze najít uvnitř kabiny nebo na vnější straně vozidla.

Brzdy se téměř vždy aplikují směrem od strojvůdce. Je to proto, aby v případě nouze mohl strojvůdce z bezpečnostních důvodů zatlačit všechny páky dopředu, aniž by musel přemýšlet o jednotlivých polohách každého ovladače.
