Elektrické koľajové vozidlá môžu prijímať energiu z rôznych typov zdrojov. Jedným príkladom sú elektrické vozidlá, ktoré odoberajú prúd z nadzemného vedenia prostredníctvom spojenia známeho ako pantograf. Ďalším príkladom by boli tie, ktoré sú poháňané palubnou batériou. Nakoniec existujú aj dieselelektrické vozidlá so spaľovacím motorom (tzv. „prime mover“), ktorý generuje elektrický prúd na palube lokomotívy. Zatiaľ čo ich vizuálna a zvuková prítomnosť sa môže navzájom výrazne líšiť, elektrické aj dieselové elektrické vozidlá používajú na pohon trakčné motory poháňané elektrinou.
