As the time flows, days pass with the sun and moon rising and setting. Availability of the sun affects visibility, outside temperature, rail wetness and the quality of charging of solar-powered equipment.

Depending on the session difficulty settings, a day cycle in Derail Valley may have a varying duration in real life. In the default presets, the cycle is set to last 2 hours in real life (which translates to 5 minutes per in-game hour).

The industries in Derail Valley have varying working hours. However, deliveries are being created at all times. Drivers in the Derail Valley Railworks and Transportation company are encouraged to work at any time of day and night.

Drivers can track the time with clocks found in the station offices, as well as by using a pocketwatch. This can be useful when trying to win the time bonus.

It is possible to sleep in beds to pass time, but this is only advisable when not having active delivery orders that can still be completed within the time bonus deadline.

To help with the lower visibility at night and in dark places, most motorized rail vehicles are equipped with headlights, taillights, gauge backlights and cab lights. In some places, tracks are illuminated by lamp posts. For activities outside of the vehicles, the driver can use a flashlight, lantern, comms radio or even the lighter to illuminate their surroundings.

In sandbox mode, the user is able to select a starting time of day for their session. Using the weather editor, depending on the difficulty settings, the user is able to modify time of day either during gameplay, or only in photo mode.
