Sähkökäyttöiset kiskoajoneuvot voivat saada virtaa erityyppisistä lähteistä. Yksi esimerkki on sähköajoneuvot, jotka ottavat virtaa yläjohdosta virroittimena tunnetun liitännän kautta. Toinen esimerkki olisi ne, jotka saavat virtansa sisäisestä akusta. Lopuksi on olemassa myös dieselsähköisiä ajoneuvoja, joissa on polttomoottori (ns. "voimamoottori"), joka tuottaa sähkövirtaa veturin sisällä.
