Elektriske jernbanekøretøjer kan modtage strøm fra forskellige typer kilder. Et eksempel er de elektriske køretøjer, der trækker strøm fra en luftledning via en forbindelse kendt som en "strømaftager". Det andet eksempel ville være dem, der drives af et indbygget batteri. Endelig er der også diesel-elektriske køretøjer med en forbrændingsmotor (den såkaldte "prime mover"), som genererer elektrisk strøm ombord på lokomotivet. Mens deres visuelle og auditive tilstedeværelse kan være vidt forskellige fra hinanden, bruger både elektriske og dieselelektriske køretøjer banemotorer til fremdrift, drevet af elektricitet.
