Parní vozidla potřebují k vaření vody spálit velké množství paliva (typicky uhlí nebo olej). To nosí s sebou na palubě. Některé lokomotivy vozí palivo na druhé jednotce, nazývané tendr, zatímco menší lokomotivy vozí vše na jediné jednotce.
