蒸汽動力車輛使用蒸汽壓力驅動。蒸汽通常透過於火箱中燃煤來加熱爐內的水,於車輛所搭載的大型鍋爐中產生壓力。來自火箱的煙霧和熱空氣通過貫穿鍋爐的煙管,並加熱煙管周圍的水,最後從鍋爐另一端的煙囪排出。
To run a steam engine, coal or oil are burned in a firebox . This heats up water in the boiler , eventually turning it into highly pressurized steam.
鍋爐中積聚的蒸汽能夠被導入氣缸內,推動當中透過連桿與車輪相連的活塞,進一步推動車輛。每個活塞循環中,在活塞被推往一個方向後,汽缸內被使用過的蒸汽就會由煙箱內的「廢汽噴口(Blastpipe)」排出、通過煙囪。這能促使空氣流動、使火箱內部產生負壓,將外在新鮮空氣吸入其中,助長火勢。
水和煤有時由稱為「煤水車」的附隨車輛載運。煤炭透過人力鏟進火箱,而水則透過稱為「噴射給水器」的裝置注入鍋爐。鍋爐中必須始終保持足夠的水量,否則可能導致災難性意外。
