Vehiculele cu abur trebuie să ardă mult combustibil (de obicei cărbune sau ulei) pentru a fierbe apa. Îl poartă la bord. Unele locomotive transportă combustibil pe o a doua unitate, numită tender, în timp ce cele mai mici transportă totul pe o singură unitate.
