Per far bollire l'acqua, le locomotive a vapore richiedono una grande quantità di combustibile, generalmente olio o carbone, che viene trasportato a bordo. A tale scopo, alcune locomotive utilizzano una seconda unità, chiamata “tender”, mentre le locomotive più piccole trasportano tutto il combustibile di cui necessitano su una singola unità.
