Elektrická kolejová vozidla mohou přijímat energii z různých typů zdrojů. Jedním z příkladů jsou elektrická vozidla, která odebírají proud z trolejového vedení prostřednictvím spojení známého jako sběrač. Dalším příkladem jsou vozidla napájená palubní baterií. Konečně existují také dieselelektrická vozidla se spalovacím motorem, který vyrábí elektrický proud na palubě lokomotivy. Zatímco jejich vzhled i zvuk se od sebe mohou výrazně lišit, elektrická i dieselelektrická vozidla používají k pohonu trakční motory poháněné elektřinou.
