Sander

To help improve traction , most motorized vehicles come equipped with sanders. Sander is an accessory operated by a control device in the cab , usually in the form of a button or a lever, that deploys sand, carried onboard the vehicle, to the driving wheels.

While sand can notably improve traction quality, it only does so on motorized vehicles that deploy the sand, but not those trailing. If wheelslip is the issue this is sufficient, because only motorized vehicles need improved grip, but if a whole train is wheelsliding , for example, sander alone won't solve the problem.

Sand is a limited resource and should be used sparingly. It can be refilled by servicing the vehicle.
