Mechanická hnacia sústava označuje mechanické systémy, ktoré uvádzajú vozidlo do pohybu. Patria sem spaľovacie motory, prevodové systémy, parné kotle atď. K mechanickému poškodeniu hnacieho ústrojenstva môže dôjsť v dôsledku kolízií, ale aj v dôsledku nesprávnej prevádzky vozidla. Nedostatok mazania alebo najčastejšie prehriatie prevodového oleja môže spôsobiť vážne poškodenie a dokonca katastrofálne zlyhanie, znehybnenie vozidla a potenciálne poškodenie karosérie.

Exposure to fire , or submersion in water, can also damage this subsystem.
