Sandbox is a game mode that lets the you play without restrictions. This is useful if you want to do a quick driving session, experiment, or record videos, for example. In sandbox, you're able to spawn vehicles freely , and cause damage without having to pay for the fees . What sandbox doesn’t have however, is buying licenses , demonstrator restoration , and career progression .

The way a sandbox session starts depends on a selected scenario. Scenario defines the starting train, starting location, as well as the starting time of day and weather conditions . You can create and share scenarios, with any of these parameters set to your preference. The parameters can even be set to be randomized on each session start.

Some motorized rail vehicles are not immediately available in sandbox mode, and must first be unlocked in career mode .

In sandbox mode you are free to use any difficulty presets right away, be it default, or custom made.
