A végső soron árammal működő vontatójárművek egyre népesebb családjában megkülönböztetünk villamos (villany), dízel-villamos, villamos-dízel (!), és villamos-hibrid mozdonyokat, illetve elvétve találkozhatunk (tisztán) akkumulátoros mozdonyokkal is. A magyar RCH is rendelkezik már kínai, a CRRC által gyártott villamos-hibrid mozdonyokkal. Míg a dízel-villamos mozdonyok erőgépük, a dízelmotor és a hozzá kapcsolt generátor segítségével termelik meg a (villamos) vontatómotorok számára szükséges áramot, addig a villanymozdonyok a felsővezetékből, menet közben, az áramszedőiken keresztül kapják a betáplálást. Bár megjelenésükben, és a rájuk jellemző hanghatások tekintetében nagymértékben eltérnek egymástól, végső soron mindegyiküket villanyáram hajtja.
