Steam chest is an intermediary reservoir from where you can admit it, using {{pll|Cutoff|cutoff}}, to the vehicle's {{pll|Cylinder Cocks|cylinders}}.

| Based on the technology used, some vehicles may have early versions of superheaters that result in delay in response from the regulator control device operation to the steam chest charging. Similarly, closing the regulator does not immediately stop the vehicle's acceleration, but rather it stops steam from being admitted to the steam chest. The vehicle will still accelerate until the steam chest has run out.

| The steam in the chest is distributed alternately at both ends of the cylinders with every cycle. It pushes the pistons inside, which are mechanically linked to the driving wheels, thus propelling the vehicle. The used steam is then expelled through the blastpipe, where it mixes with smoke from the {{pll|Firebox|firebox}} in the smokebox, and together they are released into the atmosphere through a chimney. This cycle repeats at every full rotation of the driving wheels.
