Radioactive materials are a type of HAZMAT cargo that emits ionizing radiation when leaked . Radioactive cargo is transported in highly secured sealed flasks that are difficult to damage, but if a leak occurs radiation may cause long-lasting damage to the environment and living organisms, potentially causing many deaths and contaminating an area for decades, and even centuries, into the future.

Due to the extreme level of risk involved, radioactive cargo is usually handled by the military .
