In Derail Valley days and nights cycle naturally, as the time passes by. Sun availability affects visibility, outside temperature , track wetness and the quality of charging of solar-powered equipment.

Depending on the session difficulty settings , a day cycle in Derail Valley may have a varying duration in real life. In the default presets, the cycle is set to last 2 hours in real life (which translates to 5 minutes per in-game hour).

The industries in Derail Valley have varying working hours. However, deliveries are being created at all times. In Derail Valley Railworks and Transportation company you are encouraged to work at any time of day and night.

Time can be tracked with clocks found in the station offices , as well as with a pocketwatch . This can be useful when trying to win the time bonus .

You can sleep in beds to skip nights, or just generally pass time, but this is only advisable when not having active delivery orders which can still be completed within the time bonus deadline .

Time also passes when fast traveling.

To help with the lower visibility at night and in dark places, most motorized rail vehicles are equipped with headlights, taillights, gauge backlights and cab lights . In some places, tracks are illuminated by lamp posts. For outside activities, there are several light sources available:

In addition, there are many gadgets , such as lightbars, beacons, and alternative types of headlights , which can be installed to vehicles, to further illuminate them and their surroundings.

Solar-powered equipment, such as remote controllers and flashlights , charges the quickest at peak daylight, depending on {pll|Weather|weather}}. In shadows, or at twilight, the equipment still charges, but at a lower capacity. At night, however, it does not charge.

In sandbox mode , you can select the starting time of day of your session. Using the weather editor UI, depending on the difficulty settings , you can change the time of day during gameplay, or in photo mode .
