They are transported in highly secured sealed flasks, and if leaked , may cause severe, long-lasting damage to the environment and living organisms, potentially causing many deaths and contaminating an area for decades and even centuries into the future.

Due to the high level of risk involved, radioactive cargo is usually handled by the military .
