It is the early 2000s in Derail Valley, a country emerging from a severe economic crisis.
You are starting your career as a train driver for Derail Valley Railworks and Transportation (DVRT), a railway company connecting various towns, industries and military bases in the valley via a vast railway network.
Despite the country's assets being old and worn out, they are still plentiful and sufficient for a positive comeback, given a bit of hard work.
As a DVRT employee, you are provided with the introductory tutorial, station offices, licenses, delivery orders, motorized rail vehicles, cars, service points, insurance and of course the railway infrastructure. Conveniently, DVRT also tracks fees for you.
Being big on rail transport, the country of Derail Valley used to have a railway museum, too. Once a crowded gallery of beautiful demonstrator locomotives, it is now an abandoned ruin, for sale to private individuals, along with its lost fleet.
Out there in the valley there are also some hidden vehicle garages to be discovered. Keys for them can be bought in shops.
Other than your job, you also have a modest house in the countryside.
